Health and Fitness Calculator

It is important to get an idea of certain health and fitness measurements when it comes to helping you set goals for improvement.  Use the drop down menu on the calculator to gather some estimates including on you health, including your:

  • Blood Pressure
  • Body Fat (Circumference)
  • Body Fat (YMCA)
  • Body Mass Index
  • Heartrate Zones
  • Ideal Weight
  • Measure Heartrate
  • Optimum Weight
  • Risk of Chronic Disease

What do your numbers mean? See below for more information on each of the categories.

What  do these numbers mean?

BLOOD PRESSURE
Given your systolic and diastolic blood pressure (i.e., the two numbers your doctor gives you), the FitWise Fitness Calculator displays the values on two scales that classify your blood pressure (e.g., "Normal"). You can then drag the "needle" in the scales to see how changes in your systolic and diastolic values would change your classification.

BODY FAT (Circumference)
Given various measurements (e.g., height, weight, waist, etc.), the FitWise Fitness Calculator displays your predicted percentage of body fat. The “Iliac” field refers to the “iliac crests” (i.e., the wing-like bones on the top of the pelvis). Thus, the Iliac measurement is the measurement around your “hip bones.”  (This is the term used by the American Council on Exercise's (ACE's) Personal Trainer Manual, which is where we got the formula).

BODY FAT (YMCA)
Given your gender, your waist (in inches), and your current weight (in lbs.), the FitWise Fitness Calculator displays your predicted percentage of body fat using the YMCA method.

BODY MASS INDEX (BMI)
Given your height and weight, the FitWise Fitness Calculator displays your Body Mass Index (BMI) and your BMI classification (e.g., "Normal"). You can then drag the "needle" in the scale to see how changes in your weight effect your BMI classification.

HEART RATE ZONES
Given your maximum heart rate (which can be automatically calculated based on your age) and the option of entering a resting heart rate, the FitWise Fitness Calculator displays your percent-of-maximum heart rate at various exercise heart rates (and vice versa).

IDEAL WEIGHT

Given your height, the FitWise Fitness Calculator calculates your ideal weight based on the World Health Organization's standard classification of obesity.

MEASURE HEART RATE
Given the number of heart beats during a specific time period (and with assistance counting the heart beats), the FitWise Fitness Calculator displays your heart rate in beats per minute (BPM).

OPTIMUM WEIGHT
Given your current weight, your current percent body fat, and your desired percent body fat, the FitWise Fitness Calculator calculates your optimum weight (i.e., the amount you would need to weigh if you were to gain/lose fat to achieve your desired percent body fat).

RISK OF CHRONIC DISEASE
Given your gender and age, and the circumference of you waist and hips, the FitWise Fitness Calculator displays your risk of chronic disease. You can then adjust the waist and hip measurements to see how they effect your risk.
